Grisoft Updates Free AVG Anti-Virus Tool

Czech developer Grisoft has released its next-generation free antivirus program, AVG Free, for download.

The software, available for download from the company's website, is based on a new version of the company's for-pay software, AVG Professional 7.0. At the same time, Grisoft said that it would not be supporting the previous version of its free software after Dec. 31, including virus definition updates. The announcements were made over the weekend.

"In our ongoing efforts to provide the best possible protection against computer viruses for individual consumers, we felt it was the appropriate time to overhaul and revise our hugely successful Free Edition of AVG so that consumers could realize some of the benefits and features of the considerable development and improvement that AVG has undergone," said Peter Lipa, president of U.S. subsidiary Grisoft Inc., in a statement.
